I’m searching for a auto top off
But don’t want to buy something that’s going to either flood or fail

what’s a reliable but not overly expensive ato for a 90 gal ?

Everyone loves the Tunze ATO so haven’t heard anything bad about those. Personally I use the JBJ and I love them. Cheap and easy to install. You will have to find a pump with the JBJ. The Tunze I believe come with pumps.

Tunze. Not the cheapest option but it has the best reputation as an ATO. And this is where I'm not worried about saving a couple bucks. Your ATO is a critical piece of equipment.
I was already leaning towards the tunze but wanted advice .

I’ll contact my lfs ( coral frag store ) and see if they have one in stock

I currently use Tunze ATO for mine. It is pricey, but you pay for its reliability

Tunze 3155 all the way. Second vote would be Avast Marine Works- I've only had it fail on me once (I've never had a Tunze 3155 make a mistake in over ten years).

Or this has been great for me

I have and love the Innovative Marine ATO

I bought this as a whole set up to include the reservoir.

I like that the sensors have no moving parts and so far i have not had issues with the magnetic holders for the sensors.

It is worth looking at in my opinion.

I use the Tunze 3155 Osmolator -- 3 years now and never a problem yet.
does the 3155 have redundancy built in? I.e. mechanical float in addition to an optical sensor etc? If not, can that easily be incorporated to it? I would assume you'd need a controller?

@Rob.bucek Yes. I’m using the Tunze 3155 and it has an optical sensor and a mechanical float. If the float rises too high an audible alarm is triggered.

I'm looking into reefbreeders ATO. But no experience

Edit:

One of these

Check out my post on EcolibriumReef, a DIY aquarium controller base on Arduino.

The controller has an auto top-off system that uses several redundancies to prevent flooding. A float switch will detect water level and trigger relays to open/close solenoid valves connected to an RO/DI system. Once the valves kick open, a timer is started. When timeout occurs, which means the float switch might be faulty, system will shut off and required a manual reset. Three solenoid valves, each controlled by a separate relay coils, two connected in series to the RO inlet to open/close water source, one connected to the RO outlet to direct water flow. If a float switch, a timer, three relay coils and three solenoid valves, all fail at the same time, you must have a really bad day.
More info can be found on GitHub. Let me know if you need help setting it up.

I have the avast system. works well for me. I could not find any complaints about it. I had a question, and got a quick answer. As a bonus for me, they are located in Virginia near where some family live. "Hey honey, can i get this new toy? Isn't that near your aunt?"

Yes, it has an optical sensor and a float switch backup system for redundancy.
You don't need a controller to control this ATO. I have a GHL Profilux but this is independent of the controller.

I ordered a float switch with the avast as a backup. Since it is a peristaltic pump, and should not be dead- headed, i teed in right before it and ran a recycle line back to the reservoir.
