I went to plumb my DT... And got stuck with a pipe sizing question. My 120G corner flow Marine Land tank has bulk heads 1 1/4" inner diameter. What size pipe or fitting do I need to fit that?

Adding ball valves and a couple unions... And stuck with the bulk head question.

Trying to fugure it now - so I dont have to be trying a bunch at Home Depot - only to order from BRS.

Up to you what size you want to go with. I have exact same tank and used 3/4 for the return and 1” Pvc for the drain. If you have a Dc pump you won’t need a valve to control the flow. I used 1” bulkheads. If you have 1 1/5 bulkheads you can use 1 1/4 Pvc or just buy reducer fittings to the other sizes.

The nominal size of the bulkhead determines the plumbing size, though 1 1/4 is an unusual size to use. 1” pvc has an OD around 1 1/4” so my guess is you’re dealing with 1” bulkheads.

Yes. They ARE 1" bulk heads! Ok. Made it this far. LOL.

So 1" pvc.

Do I need to 1" unions? before and after the ball valve on the drain? ... Or do the ball valves come with unions so I can remove the valve - maintain and potentially upgrade the plumb in the future? I'm also assuming I need a 1" ball valve for the drain?

Is it disadvantageous to have the drain and return both 1" ?

Aside from head pressure, what is the advantage the 3/4" return? I knew at one point... Dont remeber.

Using Hydor Seltz DC pump 1200 GPH
So gonna skip the extra valve here.

I had this figured out about a year ago for this tank and it all got delayed - was gonna go fancier... But need to get these corals and fish out of QT tanks after a year for some, 8 months for others. My poor tangs...

Have 2 Kessils a360xs coming with WIFI and K-link and a ReefOctopus Space Saving Skimmer coming on 12/8

Want to get this plumb out of the way - and roll forward. Thanks for the help. Much obliged.

Here’s my thought I could be wrong but using a 3/4” return with a 1” drain allows for a stronger pump since it will drain faster. As opposed to using a 1” return with a 3/4 drain which will restrict the drain. You can use a 1” on both return and drain. I have a Mag 9 running my 120 with a 3/4 return and a 1” drain and I have no issues. It’s also hooked up to a ball valve to control flow. Good luck.

Sweet! Thanks man!
