I have kept lots of LPS and soft corals for years but never SPS. My tank is very stable parameter wise and I thought I would add some montipora because I like the plating look. I’m putting it on its own separate rock so that I can move it should it grow quickly and need to be moved as I have read on the forums often- but I’m not sure how to attach it. Do I glue it with superglue on the edge of the rock? Or can I just glue the frag on the rock and it will encrust? Leave on the plug or take off? I usually cut the base off and glue the disk down- so if I have to take it off how?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I cut the plug off my frag then used a thicker consistency superglue to attach it to live rock. Don’t use too much superglue as it might seep out over the edge of the frag. 3 months in and it’s doing amazing , It has grown over the frag disk itself and is now encrusting over the live rock!

First make sure you buy montipora capricornis if you want plating, I've seen a lot of mislabeled montipora. Sometimes if the frag is big enough and doesn't have a lot of glue on the plug then you can remove it. I've also cut the plug stem off and glued directly to the rock.

I am lucky enough to have a nice coral shop close to me and they are very knowledgeable. I asked specifically for Capricornis and they picked the frag for me. It’s about an inch by inch.

I'm still a noob when it comes to corals. What does planting mean? I'm waiting a good 6 months but really want montipora and have a spot I'm saving specifically for it. Still learning the different types. Thanks!

Plating grows out off of the rock and even makes new layers or plates. The others are encrusting which generally stays on ans encrusts the rock or substrate. There is also digitata that grows in branches. You can find photos pretty easily of each on google.
