Asked this same question elsewhere but, I am wanting to get away from my Eshoppes RS-200 as I want a fuge in my sump. My current setup is a mixed reef 48” 120 gallon Deep Blue Pro with dual corner overflows, and dual returns with a Sicce Syncra 4.0 return pump, and a reef octopus Classic 110-int skimmer. I am shooting for a Triton Style sump with a 40breeder and have attached a diagram of what I am wanting to build. Can you guys take a look and give me any critiques or suggestions? Bubble traps needed or no? Do I need valves on the drains? Do I need to add baffle where the drains enter fuge to minimize micro bubbles and kill turbulence? Etc, etc.... As always any and all input is much appreciated.

Should be fine the way it is as long as there is enough room for your slimmer and return pump to fit

Yeah. I mocked it up with cardboard and dropped my spare return pump in to make sure it fit and then measured the skimmer area of my current eshoppes and the new sump will be almost 2” bigger. My only concern was the bubble traps and the baffle after the fuge. Don’t want Chaeto in my skimmer!!! Lol

It should be ok micro bubbles really don’t matter they are just annoying to look at

There is no way around turbulence if your running 10x the flow

I have a mesh screen blocking the algae from going into my skimmer section and I have a real deal triton sump
No matter what you do some algae is going to get thru

I currently don’t have an issue with bubbles. But I am running socks and a coarse filter between skimmer and return. You think I need to add baffles at the exit of the fuge? And is possible could you please post a pic of your sump setup @justingraham ? And also thank you for taking the time to reply to my post.

Set it up how u have it mocked up if you get bubbles put a 45 degree fitting on your return pumps inlet and face it towards the back of the sump

I would def put a baffle in between the Fuge and skimmer section (don’t know how I missed that) but you only need one no need to be crazy

When I get home I’ll take a picture it’s just a trigger systems triton sump I think with a couple upgrades I added

I know exotic marine makes baffle kits for 40 breeders as I had him make me a custom triton one might want to look into him it cost me a little coin but at the time it did what I wanted it to do

Yeah. My drawing has a baffle between fuge and skimmer. I was just wondering if adding one more would help with keeping algae or bubbles to a minimum. I looked at several baffle kits including the exotic marine but I like diy projects. Lol. I think the money I save from a diy project in the hobby could be well spent on Coral. :D

The suggestion of the 45 on the inlet is an awesome idea. That’s exactly the type of little tricks and suggestions I was looking for.

Another baffle will help but no matter how many baffles u have algae will find a way

I would spend the money on the kit unless you have an acrylic shop that can laser cut acrylic for you your going to spend the same amount of money if not more when you include your time on diy I should know I built my own sump for double the amount of money of the premade sump that is now under my tank they are in business for a reason it is hard to set up the 40 breeder with perfectly cut edges and a brand new tank
Also in a year or two you will prolly have to reglue the baffles

That’s my thoughts on it as I have done it every way possible but whatever you choose I’ll gladly help ya out

I already have the 40b that I bout at the $1/gallon sale. Was going to do glass baffles and local shop will do 1/4” glass for roughly $9/baffle. I have read that the acrylic bonded to glass will not last so that’s the main reason I was doing glass. Just kinda figured a few pieces of glass and some silicone would be much cheaper than a new trigger or similar sump.

@justingraham are you using the triton method for your tank? The core 7? That’s what I am thinking of doing but I have been looking up feedback on this method and saw where several people have dropped the triton method for lack of the Core 7 product. Back ordered, out of stock and hard to find, etc...... Any experiences like this for you?

Justin has been running the full blown Triton Method.
They did have issues keeping "The Other's" method in-stock.

Some of Trident "The Other's" method reefer's went to API

Yes I am using it but I also dose kalk for ph benefits along with saving some cash on core 7 there was a shortage but I have the big jugs I’m good for a year

It’s so easy I wouldn’t dose any other product
