Hi everyone. This post is mainly for the Aussies, but if anyone can help it would be much appreciated :)
Does anyone here know an online store that can deliver livestock to my door that has a good reputation? I tried a simple google search, but none of the companies I found struck me as someone I really want to do business with. That's not to say they don't look like good companies, they just didn't make me say "wow I need that fish from these guys!"

I'm going to post this on FB for you! Watch out for replies mate!

Hey there. With the strict quarantine laws and import permits needed we seldom see the "latest/ hot" livestock out there as is the case in the USA for example and we also have such a small reefer market here. A lot of the stock goes to where the market is i.e. the states. Most of the online stores are good though but nothing beats a good, knowledgeable, well stocked LFS, IMO.

I buy all my fish from my LFS, who have their own quarantine section and usually have a large choice.

For fish and coral decide on what species you want and organise with the LFS or the online stores in the area, maybe in Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne to try and get a particular animal. You could also join an aquarist society Marine Aquarium Society Of Sydney or try these sights:

Reef Secrets Online
Marine Fish Online - Marine Fish Buy online now
Aquarium Warehouse - Marine, Tropical & Coldwater Fish, Coral, Live Rock
Marine Fish Direct
Matt Richards' coral - Home
Reefing the Australian Way
Buy Fish online with Guaranteed live delivery | Fish World Tropical Aquarium Freshwater Saltwater - FishWorld.com.au: Buy Live Fish Online

For me living here in Perth, I would have to get very expensive permits to import coral and fish, however, I'm not sure about the Eastern states.

Good luck

EDIT: Oops, thought we were just hooking aussies up!

All good. The more Aussies the better!!

Yea, I really hate seeing all the beautiful corals the US gets and we get stuck with the same old green Duncan's and mushrooms no one else wants haha.
It's hard for me to get fish where I am as the nearest reliable LFS (I mean reliable as in not an aquarium and pet warehouse or pet smart) is a 5hr drive away and in the heat we've had in the last few weeks that's not really an option. The nearest LFS is actually just around the corner, but they only have 1 4foot tank to sell fish out of so they don't have the scorpions or triggers etc that I'm into. Thanks for all the info :)

Thanks everyone for the links/info. It's much appreciated! Now I have to do a bit more reading :)

I know this is off topic, but I started the thread so I guess that's ok?
We all know there's been a terrible heat wave across all most the entire country. With Adelaide expecting 48 degree days within the next week and my home town of Bega reaching a 44 sometime within the next week too.
Scary thoughts!
I can't source, afford to purchase or afford to run a chiller so my tank temps are ridiculous. Mines topped out at 33 degrees so far today. I'm sumpless and need a tight fitting lid to keep a daredevil snowflake eel inside so a fan is not an option. I've floated ice, but it didn't even budge my thermometer. So my question is, how are you all keeping tank temps down?

Geez dude that's a scorcher hopr it cools down soon. If your tank is sealed that will in crease themp & no gas exchange which could also affect your ph levels...

Cheers man. The tar on the road was melting at 6 o'clock this morning, it's ridiculous. My shoes got all sticky.
My tank is pretty much sealed up, but I have a HOB skimmer that's sucking in lots of air so gas exchange isn't a huge issue. I'm trying to cool a bucket of water to do a water change and hopefully that will help. I'm thinking I may have to put a few coke bottles of salt water in the fridge and do daily small water changes to help with temp swings.

Geez that's extremely hot buddy...

Agreed but maybe both so that you don't over work the chiller. A mate of mine uses an old aircon as a chiller but replaced with titanium tubing... just a thought...

I got a Hailea chiller a few years ago and it has never given me any hassles, keeps the temp steady during summer (you know we like it hot here in Perth).

Hailea Chiller HC- 500A 1/2HPJust remember to get one rated for slightly higher than your tank volume, then it won't work so hard. They really are a good investment.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions everyone :)
I'm renting so I can't get air con unfortunately. Even the good quality portable units need to be installed in a window frame for exhaust. Plus $500+ for a chiller is too far out of my price range at the moment.
I am considering a DIY chiller. I'll find an old bar fridge or freezer, wack 2 holes in the side and put pipe in one hole, coil it around inside the freezer for longer contact time and out the other hole back into the tank. I'll put an old pump on the end to push water through, add a bit of silicon to seal up the gaps between the pipe and hole and it's good to go. My only concern is not knowing what the inside of a fridge or freezers walls are like so I don't know how safe drilling would be.

A fan blowing on the water surface will help lower the temperature through evaporation.

But really for the sake of providing the best possible environment for your tanks inhabitants you need to spend the money and buy a chiller.
A chiller in aus is a necessity in my opinion.
