aussie vs indo torch

i know the difference between the two is where they come from, but what are some physical differences and care differences between indo torches and aussie torches?

I just asked my LFS owner this question last weekend. He said main difference is indo torches have the long flowing polyps and aussie torches are shorter/stubbier. I'm not sure if this is 100% the case. I'm curious too what others say.

Here is my Aussie torch. Tentacles are somewhat fatter and end at a stub

here is one on google search that’s Indo and the tentacles are much much longer. Sometimes they and in more of a point. Indos are supposed to be much hardier but only have had Aussie torches and never lost one. Knock on wood

Indo polyps are much thinner and longer where as Aussie torches have a stubbier and thicker polyp. Aussie can still be longer but they are much thicker and the tips are much bigger as well

What you have is an indo, a real Aussie torch is short and stubby, like this pic.

Not necessarily, when in the home aquarium for extended periods of time you will find that aussie torch tentacles will extend a bit further than when they are recently collected.

My go to is the actual skeleton and the structure that it grows in. Aussie torches usually thicker skeletons and when they "branch" they do so more like a wall. The heads divide and slowly become 2. Because they have to build a lot more skeleton they are also significantly slower growing in my experience.

I wonder if Indo’s take forever to split like the Aussie I have. It’s basically 4 heads but still connected just a bit on one end after a year but together it’s the size of a cantaloupe. I would love to frag a head or two and trade with someone who has a different color. They are frustratingly slow splitters.

Wanting to revive this post. Is there a clear cut distinction yet?

I have an indo gold with tentacles up to 8"+, but a dragon soul from ARC with tentacles only 2-3".

On the other hand, I have an Aus labeled black with green tip which has tentacles up to 4+" and a Todd's torch from cherry corals along the same lengths as the Dragon soul, 2-3". I'm having a difficult time making distinctions based off of tentacle length alone.

My main concern is grouping as I do not want to chance aussie torches touching indo's.

IME, Aussies take much longer to split than Indos. I have both and my Indos seem to grow and sprout new heads often when happy. Aussie on the other hand, I have one splitting right now and was thinking she was dieing when only half of the tentacles retracted. I started researching and came upon this thread and wanted to share my experience. With the tentacles retracted it looks more wall like, but I can confirm that it's splitting.. at least that's what it looks like to me.. looks like two heads are starting to round out. I'll take pictures and post a little later today.

I definitely agree now. I have to trim my indo torches all the time. The aussie’s tend to have way thicker “trunks” and the heads are way bigger as well. This one has gone from 1 to 6 heads in 6 months but they are all still attached and so close together you can’t cut them. They seem to split relatively quickly but it takes a while to be able to safely fragged. The indo polyps are way more stringy whereas the Aussie has a nice fat polyps that you don’t need to worry about having 10-12 inches of clearance around
