Australian live rock

I am sad that the corals on it look very dead. I wonder if this is because Unique corals keeps it for a week before selling.

I wonder if it looks more like this when they receive it?

It’s probably been dried a bit. No way it’s fully live. They would almost have to ship submerged from Australia. I have a feeling it’s not shipped in water from Australia. I reached out to ask them how I would receive it and when they told me wet paper I knew there wasn’t much on it to keep alive. They didn’t even offer the fully submerged option.

Live rock when it was still collected and shipped was always wet never submerged and then went into holding tanks at the LFS to cure. Have to say, when u went to the LFS back then you knew they just got in some rock.
Boat Rock

My TBS was filled with hitchhikers (including several stone crabs).
I counted 20(not kidding) pistol shrimp. Sounded like fireworks going off in the tank every night. Several porcelain crabs..etc etc. Sponges and tons of macros.
The rock is pretty dense and straight rock shape though.
Overall pretty happy with it.

I got some rock way back then that wasn't boat rock. LFS was like going on all insane about it being the best and holy **** the life... it cost an arm and a leg. Thank god my tank was only 12g. IDK how he got rock that was so nice.

Changing water daily at this point. It's giving off a steady amount of Ammonia. I see some kind of bivalve on mine but haven't inspected closely. Mostly just lots of different algae.

Good to know. Did you clean the rock up at all when you got it or just shook it off? How many days out from delivery?

I got my order today. Unfortunately, I only received 3 out of 10 lbs (I had ordered their last 3 lbs and they added more so put in another order but wasn't shipped together). I should get the rest of the 7 lbs next week. I did weigh this piece and it came out at 3 lbs so I would say they are fairly accurate/on the heavy side considering I had cleaned off some debris prior to weighing.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied and will order more if they are still offering when I upgrade. I noticed a chiton or two crawling around on the rock so there are some hitchhikers. I've also ordered rock from KP Aquatics. KP seems denser and even their "base" liverock had more purple/pink that this, but this rock is clearly just years of dead skeleton and shells stacked on top of each other--much more delicate. Eventually, this stuff will top the KP and marco rock I have. Definitely not the deep purple/pink in the picture but should color up quite nicely. I would also echo what others have said. It is brittle so expect some little bits to be knocked off in shipping. Overall, pretty happy!

Edit - I would also add it was packed very well!

My 7# still has a bit of funk to it. I didn't do any thorough scrubbing and it's been getting almost 100% water changes daily since 3/4/22. I don't have any ammonia testers on hand since this was a bit of an impulse buy.

I recieved my 7# last week on tuesday and had scrubbed the dead stuff off when mine came in and rinsed it pretty well in saltwater. I did 3 water changes to keep the ammonia down the first 3 days. I did clean off some more die off during those water changes as well. 2 days ago was the last time i tested ammonia and it was at .08 with my red sea kit i also tested nitrites/nitrates and both were present. I haven't done a water change or tested since then but I do have an ammonia badge in the bucket and it shows 0 for ammonia for 2 days now. I'll do a sniff test later or tomorrow to see if it's good to go or not yet if it's got that funk I'll test parameters tomorrow again and see where it's at.

I don’t think UC would tarnish their rep on some live rock coming from a location other then advertised.
To be honest here, UC has a very Iffy reputation to build from.

There have been numerous waves of zoa spiders, aefw, and chop shop 1/2" per head colonies shipped out a day after cutting carrying all sorts of infections to people's tanks coming from UC in the last year alone.

ya i did get pests on a coral from them. luckily the dip caught it. I figure it just happens sometimes when you bring in wild stuff. dip dip dip!

The ships going down….didn’t know. Always thought they were a reputable vendor Nvr had issues in the past. Lucky I guess
