I see that you reefers stateside have had access to this item for a while.

Is it worth the money to get one installed to stop your skimmer from overflowing?
Or does it have quality issues and is buggy?

I currently use a smart plug on my skimmer to turn it off before my red sea reef energy is dosed.
This has helped majorly to stop it overflowing.

I presume that I would plug the smart plug into the autoaqua, as then even if it was time to switch on the autoaqua would stop it.

I presume so. The AutoAuqa provides power to anything plugged into it until the optical sensor detects something blocking it, in this case skimmate in the skimmer cup. At that point, it shuts off power to whatever is plugged in and produces an alarm until reset. There is about a five minute delay after you reset it until it turns the skimmer back on.
