Hey guys and gals,

I bought the auto shutoff kit with float from BRS.

My question is do you guys run these straight to your sump from the ro/di unit or to a separate tank and use a ATO with a pump to send it to your sump?

I only run it from a separate reservoir. If you run it directly to your RODI system you can have a huge flood of it gets stuck on. With a reservoir you're limited to just that volume.

Yeah, I was just trying to avoid having to set up another tank for topping off. It would be so much easier to run the ro/di line straight to the sump with with the float switch...

Anyone have theirs setup lie this?

You certainly can do it that way. I'd add a few layers of flood prevention. Like a timer to only let it run for a determined amount of time.

If you were to run it straight from your RODI I would install 2 floats switches in series so both have to activate(close contacts) to add water and if either don't make contact(open circuit) the valve would close.

Or if you are referring to a mechanical float that actuates like a valve, then I would advise against that completely. A RODI at 40 psig would probably leak through the valve and you would have low salinity and possible a flood in your house.

Yeah I have this kit. I'll probably run it to a separate reservoir next to my sump and then use a real ATO and pump it over... I have plenty of room since my sump is in the garage anyways

Never run your RO/DI directly to your sump or display.
Always fill an ATO reservoir so you have that extra level of safety if something fails and you don't flood your reef with fresh water.

Not to mention running rodi filters in short periods through out the day according to Marc Levenson, will lessen the life of the ro membrane.

I use that kit to fill my reservoirs. I have a float valve on my salt mixing can and my ATO reservoir. The ATO reservoir float valve has enough rodi line to reach my rodi unit (like 10 feet). I just connect the tubing via a quick connect union and turn on the rodi unit. I don't have to worry about it overflowing and I don't have to lug anything around. Just disconnect tubing and put it back under the stand.

I would not connect rodi straight to the tank.
