I’m thinking about adding a auto water change to my new tank I’m setting up. The tank of course is no where near my water mixing station. I set up a mixing station so I don’t need to carry buckets, just roll out my hose and pump water into the tank.

My mixing station is in the garage. My tank is in the living room which is about 60ft from the station. I have vaulted ceilings and a pretty cool wife but I don’t think she would go for tubing being strapped to the wall. The tank is going 140 gallons with 35ish gallons in the sump.

I was going to use the Apex DOS but don’t really want to have two 5 gallon buckets next to the tank. Racking my brain here and need some input.

How fast can the DOS change out 5 gallons and what’s the distance limitations to pump water in and out of?

Here is my mixing station. Guess I’m just looking to be a lazy reefer and not have to pump water out of my tank and roll my hose back up!

Permanent plumbing is what you need to do better than what you have.

PEX tubing is aweome since it goes places other plumbing can't without a lot of bother, but if plumbing isn't your thing consider hiring a pro. :)

What pump you connect to it is up to you, but you may want to shop around a little to see what's out there.

Hopefully this helps a little!

ATOs have a medium probability of eventually failing with the possibility of dumping 100% of the reserve water, washing out all salinity in the tank.

I would plan on only enough water in the ato reserve that if it failed and washed out the tank your salinity would only go to a low point of 1.015 SG at a worst case scenario. Having too much water where everything gets washed out at 1.000 SG....is just asking for a disaster IMO

Example: my ato reserve for my 180g DT plus 100g sump is a mere 15g reserve. If the 15g failed and dumped completely, my SG only goes down .003ish.

I have to refill the 15g reserve once to twice a week via a separate container of 60g via plugging in a pump. Very little effort of pumping, watching 15g level, unplugging. 3min job

I've had a couple of failures over 5yrs but inconsequential bc 15g that got dumped means little changes to my tank. If my reserve of 60g failed, my DT wold have been a complete loss

Got me thinking. I can run half way there in the attic then put it behind the baseboards. To the tank...wife is giving me dirty looks now. Never good when I’m walking around the house with a measuring tape.

Look at maybe a stenner or masterflex grade pump. They could handle the distance a little better I’d imagine.
