Auto water change or more system water volume?

I have a 120 gallon display tank with a 35 gallon main sump and two 40 gallon Brute garbage cans plumed into the sump. One of the garbage cans is about 2/3 full of live rock (can #1) and the other just houses additional water (can #2). When I want to do a water change, I just close off can #2, drain it, mix new saltwater, and then open it back up to the system. The question is: Would I be better off using can #2 as an auto water change reservoir?

If you can automate small changes though-out the day it might lessen any swings in tank parameters. Id say give it a shot as long as you have safeties in place to protect from an overflow or stuck on pump.

Thanks Jax. I have a Bubble Magus doser with two unused pumps that I could use to perform the water changes in small amounts over the course of a day.

Oh, and yes, I have a safety that would prevent a flood.
