to those who have auto water changes, i'm planning on using a dos soon for this purpose, how do you manage dosing 2 part? can i treat the fresh water vat (say 50 gallons worth of water) and then auto water changer would also be dosing too or it doesn't work that way? should i just dose directly into tank?

Are your water changes geared to your dosing somehow to begin with? (ie today) Mine aren't, but at one time they were....water changes were used to make up for coral growth for a brief period when I didn't have many corals growing.

Seems like there should be minimal to no relationship, depending what you're trying for and how old the tank is, etc.

IMO your salt should mix up pretty close to your everyday levels...aside from that I wouldn't be concerned.

ok, well my prior tank i was a 30gallon which i did a 5g water change weekly with coral pro salt, i dosed alk and ca to daily (like 20ml) to account for the loss compared to the salt mix levels.

my new 100g i am trying to automate my life more. i plan on doing auto water changes, i have about 100G of actual water in the system so i was thinking 10% weekly water changes automatically running each night about 1.5 gallons a night. should the constant water changes replace the dosing? i havnt done anything yet just planning phases. tank is running with ato and no dosing at the moment.

Then yes...if you're using a salt mix that's very different from tank parameters you'll be better off adjusting the new water in the barrel with a little baking soda and calcium chloride, etc.

(Really, you'll be better off finding a salt mix that's more similar to your tank....or making your tank more like your salt mix. Your corals won't care which way you do it, so do it the easier way.)
