Does it matter if the reservoir is open to the atmosphere or should it be enclosed?

If you have it open you'll loose more to evaporation, not alot, it some. Plus I like having mine closed so nothing can fall into it and contaminate my freshwater source. Plus I have a one year old, so if I dont keep it closed up she tries to play in the water lol :D

Just wait until I'm bigger and able to drag a chair over and play with the fishies Daddy. ;Smuggrin;Smuggrin;Smuggrin

Since I don't have a fancy ATO Reservoir I just use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid so I don't have to worry about the dog drinking out of the bucket Plus cuts down on evaporation and items getting into it just like crabs_mcJones said.

I use a dog food plastic container on one tank with the lid mostly closed. Tank uses water faster than it can evaporate. Other tank I use a 20 gal hex tank with the tank lid.

I would cover it. I had an open reservoir for a while and over time and it would collect dust and other crud.

Someone posted in another thread that pure water is really good at absorbing contaminants from the air. That rang true, mine has a good lid.

Definitely keep a lid on it. RODI water is devoid of everything, so it acts as a magnet attracting anything and everything from the air, including dust and any aerosols you may use in your house.

I have mine closed I was using a brute trash can but just got mine upgraded to a 100 gallon closed tank with a low water sensor a high water sensor and a float switch too

I keep mine closed. It's not air tight as there are tubes and wires involved, but the main cover where I pour water is closed. I've forgotten to put the cover back on before with no problems, but I would rather not have dust or a random bug fall in and die.

I will tell you something that happened to me this winter, I did not have my RODI on an auto system was just making 30 gallons at a time in to a brute trash can. Well I checked the trash can one day and noticed something floating on the top of the water, well it was dark and I had paper towel close so I took a paper towel to scope it out. big mistake, it was fire ants lol. I guess because it was dry they came to my RODI for water. I hate Fire ants lol

I use the largest "Vittles Vault" Pet Food container for my Tunze ATO reservoir, large easy access screw on lid and food grade plastic. They come in several sizes and have also seen a cheaper knockoff recently at Costco.
