Awesome find at the lab i work at today. 3 200L (~52gal) containers used to ship filtered water. There is no number on the container indicating the type of plastic but i assume its probably ok since its for lab use.

Anyone know for sure? Attached item number sticker.

No water in them. Just the containers.

@Fudsey im planning on using all these. 1 for rodi, 1 for saltwater, and one for my extra live rock from a tank i haven't set back up.

I talked to my coworkers and this is something that gets thrown out every few months.

So next time ill try to grab some and sell them cheap.

Yes, figured that. You don't throw away $6000 worth of water like that lol.

There's plenty of medical labs quite close to me, there's a big univeristy hospital. Might be worth asking around for things like that...

I got a great deal on one of the Blue plastic 55 drums, $20. Then got another one free from one of my customers, a pharmaceutical lab. 1st was used for lemon flavor drink syrup. Freebie was for ro water.... Win win :) Closed lid though

Plastics, even those that are safe to maintain food, are polymers and, as such, are not totally impervious to the liquids they carry inside; there may be absorption and adsorption of chemicals, if they have already carried them in. It is important to make sure that they have not come into contact with any toxic products before using them for biological purposes.

Best regards

@Jose Mayo i spoke with the guy who threw these out and he said the only thing ever in them was the water that came in it. Said he uses it for endotoxin analysis on cancer cells and the bins are designed to leach as little as absolutely possible. He seemed to think this would be much higher quality than a water bin from somewhere like tractor supply that is only food grade.

Ill try it out and see what happens.

Well after using one of these in my freshwater tank as ato a tester i started to get diatoms after a few weeks. Ive never had diatoms in my freshwater system before so i think its safe to assume its coming from the barrels.

Any ideas on how to clean them to get rid of leaching silica?

If i cant ill just use them to irrigate my garden.

I think that they are defective they will not stand up straight, so I might have to take them off your hands.

I have another one just sitting at work if you live near Washington DC @bluespotoctopus

Which container are you talking about? I think it is highly unlikely the water for injection containers are leaching enough silica to be an issue.

just checking to see if you did anything to them before putting them in play? vinegar, ammonia, anything? not knowing how porous these are the silica might be a challenge for at least a few flushes. there are a couple articles in the archives about silica and plastics. pushes a lot of focus onto the RO/DI systems being used though:

Never cleaned it. It has a smell of the mold used in casting it. Like the same smell i remember as a kid opening a new action figure. Its LLDPE plastic

I also only use RO/DI. I do need to change the ro media soon but im still getting tds of 0.0

I might change the RO media first and see if that resolves the issue, before buying new containers. Let us know please!
