I was introduced to a new style of LED lighting that is supposedly they are metal halide alternatives. Now I have used pretty much all forms lighting and esp with diff LED's. now these LED's my father found on ebay and that's how I found out about them. Each light is just one LED set up spotlight style with 120 degree color radius. They come in 10K, 12K, 14K, 450nm blue and come in 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, & 200watts. I can def say that these LED's are the best I have seen or used as far as shimmer and how much u get from such little wattage. My father put 3 of the 20watt 14k's over a 125 gal reef with softies, lps, and sps and its been a month since they had the new lights added and corals look great, but if I picked them out I woulda went with the 50watt ones. They say by only having one LED instead of a bunch of low wattage ones is that you have one focal point of light and I think it shimmers just as good if not better hen MH's. plus they are affordable he 20watt 14K is $50-$60. Here's a couple pics of them.

These are cool multi-chip LED's some companies have incorporated them into a fixture w/ blue LED's for actinic support (like the Maxspect gen-2 fixtures w/ 30w multichip LED's) also I know CADlights is starting to install these on their fixtures. I really liked them on my maxspect they added alot of shimmer and really packed a punch for such a small footprint.

Looks like its the 20 watt LED garden spot light. Hmmm even better as it is probably water resistent. I would expect them to work fine in smaller areas . Wouldnt expect a wide coverage but you should be good as far as penetration goes. I get Down to 27 inches deep in My system with 3 and 5 watt leds so 10 watts should do well as far as penetratiOn. However, understand that 60 watts of LEDs isnt going to give you a lot of area in the coverage. You might consider doubling your density if you are looking for good long term results with sps.

There are a lot of tanks built using these chip types. I have built a light for a Fluval Edge 6gallon using a 20w chip. There is a thread with over 100 pages about these chips on another reef forum. I'm not sure what the rules are on this site about linking to other forums, so you can PM me if you want a link to the other thread. They have become popular enough to even have a 5 channel multichip made specially for group buys that has 5 different wavelength LED types on it, all channels are independently controllable, though you would need 5 dimming drivers to run each one.

In practice they are set up much the same way as a collection of smaller 3w LEDs would be set up, using the same drivers.

Yes they are dimmable btw, and they are not 1 LED, there are in fact multiple small LEDs on one chip, giving the appearance of one large LED. You can see the individual LEDs if you just look at the face of the chip, they are hard to miss.

I can also give you a link to the seller if you would like, through PM.

the site I get my led's from sells these setups cheap I think around $35-$40 you can get im 10w-100w setup they even have blue,
I noticed they even have a 500w chip

Hey thanks for all the feedback. Just to update since I first posted this threa

d. I still only have 3x 20watt 14k led so that's only 60 watts spread across a 125 gal and I must say wow even I thought my sps were going to start fading but nope corals have never looked so amazing I honestly believe this is he future in reef lighting. Now I will be adding 2x 10watt 450nm blue LED's. and that will really make the tank pop.

Sorry quick ?? Would my frags mostly sps benefit more if I had both 12k & 14k as opposed to just one? I would think it would only help but idk if I would spend extra $ to do both and here are some updated pics.

Lol non taken its my iPod camera but I will say they did lose some color during my tank swap but once I add the blue LEDs my colors will really pop. Also sadly I lost some real beauty's a year ago Purigin sterilized my water practically. Here are some of my lost gems but ill finish on saying I was very sceptic so bout these LEDs but they have done more then I would have imagined for such a low wattage.

i dont see how they are dimable and are they dimable by controller?

hey i just wanted to give an update on my tank since i've been running just 3 10watt LED spotlights at 14K... Now i'm no noob to this hobby well passion lol, and if i hade a dollar for every person who told me that i couldnt keep solfties & zoas, LPS, and some sps like ORA purple haze monitipora, or my acro's in a 125 gallon tank. Now i also have a awesome custom built dual refugium. here is a list of what i put into my tank: lugols solution by brightwell aquatics, coral amino acid solution also brightwell, koral color biochrome, and my new #1 salt mix Royal Nature Advanced Pro Formula "which is supposdely the only salt mix that only uses natural sea salt with zero additives".

My corals have been growing faster then i've ever seen and colors are coming out and i still havnt added the 2 10watt LED's in 453nm blue.
