Baby banggai cardinal surprise

I just wanted to share my surprise when I was doing my water change and found this little guy in my sump refugium.

Either as an egg or a baby, this guy made it from the display tank, over the hob overflow, through the prefilter (although I occasionally pull then off to clean), down the plumbing, avoiding the skimmer and into the display refugium. Life will find a way

Cool, I also keep FW mbuna so the same. I've never seen any babies in the tank and this is my first saltwater fry so unexpected but very cool!

Are cardinal fish dimorphous or did I just get lucky that I got a male and female?

Got lucky as 2 males generally fight till death

I pulled it out of the refugium and now in a breeder box in the display. Okay to release it when it's big enough? Or if it's male he will get attacked? It's a 6 foot 125 gallon, not sure if that helps so they would have separate areas to reduce aggression.

When it’s big enough to not get eaten or picked on

Are you feeding it in the breeder box? They eat baby brine when first out. Or is yours already on frozen?

The sump proabably had copepods or something most breeder boxes will be high up and out of plankton area.

I was giving it some flake food and frozen brine shrimp, but I released it earlier this week since I'm out of town this week and didn't want to make things too complicated for the housesitter. Fingers crossed it does okay... I don't have any really aggressive fish.

Another baby! Saw this clutch of eggs a few days ago and yesterday there was the tiniest of babies swimming around our so I moved them all to a breeder box and added some flakes, which it was eating. I guess Bangaii are not mouth brooders

Well they are mouth brooders. But the male will spit out eggs for various reasons.

That is pretty amazing, the egg clutch is really big. You can see one of the proud parents swimming over head and guarding them in the 1st photo
