Okay so I thought maybe hitchhikers that went unnoticed when I noticed 4-5 of these tiny turbo snails in my tank they are not much bigger than the size of a pin head. Then I found a bunch more in my sump in various sizes. Do theses guys really breed in our tanks with all the preditors?? Keep in mind i had a snail free sump. That was jail for my crabs i had at startup.

Also could they be the cause of my DKH wanting to drop as of lately. I added some corals and got the typical dip in ALK but over the past few day I keep having to add ALK to maintain my 8.0-8.5 range. Which i thought strange. Thoughts??

Looks like a trochus snail. They readily breed. Good snails to have.

Trochus... I think I used the wrong name, when I said turbo. Thank you for the info never had these guy reproduce in any of my tanks so was/am very surprised. I have now counted 8 in the display and another 15 or so in the sump.

I love Trochus snails and wish they would bread in my tanks. One of my LFS charges $9.98 for 3 snails..any type. The other charges $2.99 each snail...no mater the size. Since snails have to be replaced regularly, breeding snails that produce is a win-win situation! Congrats! That's awesome!

Definitely, Trochus snails breed readily in home systems! Thats awesome yours are surviving!

Make sure they don’t get into your skimmer. I had one go in there and cause a rattle. Didn’t damage the impeller luckily

Thank you for the heads up. I am planning on leaving a good portion in the sump just because there is a TON of algae in there they will never starve. I will make sure to watch the skimmer section. So far only saw two that crossed the barrier into the skimmer section and one in the return pump section, but i have a strainer on that pump. I found a few dead shells, I guess the crabs figured- we are already in jail might as well have a good meal. LOL.

So I bought around $20 worth of trochus snails and initially just put them in my sump, which has no other livestock. Goal is to have them breed to relative plague proportions then move into my display. I have noticed most fish will eat the tiny snails, including my tang. Hopefully by allowing a colony to start in my sump undisturbed I can have an endless supply of these guys. Great snails, and they can upright themselves.
