Kids are grown two colleges paid for. Time to start reefing again. Man things have really changed no more MH lighting and wet/dry sumps. All tanks were glass. Cycled a 55 gallon and upgraded to good deal on 90 g starting this weekend. New tank came with large sump so had to plumb that up first. So do I want a refugee or ATS?? Lighting opinions are ridicules also what to do? Now I have to go from Fluval canister filter assume I dump the small amount of bio-media in the sump to start with? Fish load is only 1 chrome and 1 blue legged Hermit crab. Do I even need a filter with that small of a load in a 90g tank for now?

Welcome krw
2 colleges paid for, that is great, congrats.
Many new things to learn, and old things to remember.
I run a refugium and ato.
Brs has some nice videos on latest equipment and tank setup.

Did you have those rocks in the cycled tank? If so, those should provide your bio-filter for that small bio-load. Depending on what you want to end up with, lights and filtration (protein skimmer!) are basic items that need to be done right up front or else you can easily waste a ton of money upgrading along the way.

Welcome to Reef2Reef. Start a build thread and ask questions there and post pictures of your progress on the way.

Yes those were already cycled and thanks for the advice.

Welcome to R2R!!! And welcome back to the hobby!!! As far as lighting nothing beats the old school! Bold statement I know! And some may argue, and that’s fine. But in my mind there isn’t anything other then the sun itself that will every beat out a solid halide/t12 VHO setup! The issues of heat and energy consumption not withstanding, if you can swing it and want to keep it old school there’s absolutely no reason not to. On the other side of that if the heat and energy rates are a factor, lots of success has been had all over the community with the t5 hybrid method. As a matter of fact my dedicate sps build will most likely be running two Radion gen 5 xr30 blues and a 4 bulb t5 hybrid. Can’t wait to see your progress whichever route you choose!!!
