Ive been out of the reef for 7 or so years now. Just got a fiji 81g tank for my birthday. Was needing some advice on equipment. It looks like DC return pumps are the way to go. Also is there some sort of tank automation nowaday?

This tank will be a mixed with fish and corals.

There is plenty of tank automation today, from water top-offs to dosing to just about everything.

Is there a one size fits all system? I think is rather have one system that i can add to later on for dosing and heater control and pumps. (i think?)

Another thought is putting my sump in the crawspace. (Sealed crawlspace with hvac vents) But where i needed to put the sump is about 40 feet from the tank above in the house. I know there is pipeing between the tank and sump but is there a reason not to do this? I know a bigger return pump and put the thermostat for the heater in the tank vs the sump. With the longer drains there will be a bigger vacuum on the drain to the sump. Will this create extra noise in the external overflow box?
