30 odd years ago I built my first marine tank.. I already had a couple of cichlid tanks and the new one went fine (well to be honest there was a hiccup with a failed heater - stuck on - while we were away for the weekend and then noone warned me that Boxfish don't like being bullied. But after that I had a stable fish only tank (about 40g) which ran for over a year with minimal maintenance. A house move for work meant the end of the hobby for some time.
So I recently decided to start another marine tank. I tend to be a bit of a gadget freak so I soon had quite a mass of wires and pipes. A few fish added over a couple of months a couple of frags and a cleanup crew.
And then it all went pear shaped!! All my test levels were in range but algae was rampant and things started dying, particularly those things that were supposed to be eating the algae. I realise now that I was guilty of chasing problems without letting the system stabilise.
So a couple of bottles of peroxide, a complete strip and clean and I will start again, older and wiser (older anyway!)
Meanwhile, just for contrast a 12g mixed tank I set up in parallel, to house a really obnoxious pair of clown fish, is running just fine.
