As the title says, I sold my last reef 10 years ago which was a 180g. I started to miss it and picked up a 75g with the hopes that this will be enough for me this time. LOL Even the old forum I was a part of has all but died off. So I joined R2R a very short time ago and I like it here. I am located in San Marcos Texas.

The tank, Its a simple setup with a 30g refugium and skimmer. Current LED light. About 60-70lbs of live rock and some softies and 1 green birdsnest. It had some hair algae already and the Nitrates shot up from the move. The birdsnest has been choked out and killed in the middle which kinda sucks so I will let the tank settle back down and frag it out. Currently it has 2 damsels, 1 Clown, 1 Flame Angel, 1 banded shrimp and a few crabs.

Im doing water changes to help get the Nitrates back down. And I will pick up some Chaeto tomorrow for the fuge. I also have a clean crew getting here tomorrow. The return pump it came with is pretty weak and might be moving 1 to 2 tanks an hour. So thats not helping either. New pump will be here tomorrow with fuge lights and other odds and ends.

My vision for the tank is to have a mix of corals. My other tanks were mixed. I know a lot of new things have come out since my last tank and I am trying to figure it all out. I like the LED lights over the MH I used to run due to the heat they produced. So I will be looking for a good light setup without braking the bank.

Pumps, it needs a pair at least with a controller. Again, Im looking.

Controllers, well I never had one and it was a lot of work running it by hand so to speak. So I need to learn about these and look at getting one. The more it can run itself the better.

Corals, of course. Im always looking.

With all this being said, here she is. Ill be posting pics of the progress. Commenting on threads if I can help and asking a lot of questions of my own. Its time to be knowledgeable again. School is back in session. :)

Pictures were taken quick with my phone. Ill use the Nikon next time. Please excuse these. :)

Welcome to R2R!
As far as lighting, if you're looking to go LED, do you have a specific budget you'd like to meet? You can go with something on the more economical side such as the black boxes, which are more than capable of growing coral. Or pump it up to the luxury more costly options such as kessil, ecotech AI Orphek ect which come with much more options on top of being able to successfully grow coral.
For pumps I really like the Ecotech Vortechs. The wireless models are able to be synced to create waves and random flow throughout your tank. Another option would be the hydor pumps. Great pumps that don't break the bank and can move alot of water.
Controller...This one I struggled with for a long time. I was always intimidated by a controller, and never wanted to get one. Used power strips with on off buttons and just a regular heater with an internal thermostat. However, after finally making the switch to a controller, I have to say it's not as intimidating as I thought and don't think I could ever go back to the old way. Currently running an Apex and have nothing but good things to say about it.
Again welcome to the forum and were glad to have you here with us :)

Welcome to R2R! Your experience is valuable here and hopefully some of us newer reefers can give as well as receive!

I would just cut what dead part of the birds nest out that you can easily. It will grow so fast it will cover up that area surprisingly quickly. It's a nice sized colony already, a a shame to frag it up and start all over!

Crabs, thanks for the info. Budget, that is tough for me. LOL. I have a race truck to feed as well. But I always shoot for middle of the road and end up spending more later on some things. Its a sad reality. I've been online a lot in the last week trying to absorb the info and try to find which route to go with.
Lights, I like the LED setups. Not sure how much to spend on the yet.
Pumps, I was just looking at them trying to decide those as well. Reviews and others experiences means a lot to me. But I also know I dont need to break the bank to push water. I can get too crazy with high flow being a sand bottom.
Controllers. I was looking at the Apex as well. They seem really nice. Its not something I need right away due to not having much to keep up with right now, but I will be looking for one sooner or later. And if a smoking deal pops up for one, then I would go ahead and buy it.

Salty, Ill try to contribute what I can. As for the coral, the entire center is hair algae and dead. Im not sure anything other than fragging is an option. I dont know if it will grow out in a manner to be able to hide the dead area. And that wouldn't look that good.

I was just thinking about a pair of these. They would flow enough and the price is nice for the features. Of course if I can find a used set of another pump, thats always an option. I like buying used to save cost.

Welcome back to the hobby and to the group!

All of the rest is my opinion, so take it for what its worth :D

When you can, ditch the orbit lights. LED lights are awesome and i have had black boxes, AI's and radions. I am in love with my radions, but when they fail i will be going a different route because of their cost. That said, they are great lights with proven results. I have seen some amazing tanks under black boxes and you cant beat their price. I just dont like the double power cords on the ones i have had in the past.

Flow.. This one is fun. There is so much crazy stuff out there, its almost insane to think about. What i try to focus on is the ecosystem you want to be on. If you like ecotech, go all ecotech. Simplified. If you want a controller, check compatibility before hand so you are not buying multiple times. Hydors did me solid for years. I have ecotechs and love the minimalist design and the wifi control of them. But there are 100 other options.

Controller. This, in my opinion, should be your last purchase. I have never had one and wont anytime soon. They are expensive and they do amazing things. But these things are not important to me. I dont need to know what my temp is at all times and if it changes in the day, just that my heater is working. There are other things within a controller that make them worth more than their cost, but i dont have that need yet. Simple toggle switches do the trick.

I agree on the controller, it really seems to be more of a monitoring system. I know that they can control things, but I am still learning that info. I too use simple switched and timer systems. Like for water flow, I have a Re Sea wavemaster pro that was on my other tank. Of course its just on/off switches and I like the ramping and other effects of the newer systems. Ill look at the black boxes
