One quick question...do you have any sand-sifting gobies in your tank? When I added a yellowheaded sleeper goby to my tank, he kept the sand so stirred up that the diatoms and cyano didn't stand a chance. I'd try that before any antibiotics. Just a thought.

In THIS tank i have tiger conchs. I dont have it on the sand, but everywhere else. I think im goin to chemiclean and continue to dose h202.

I would discontinue h2o2 use as it is not cyanobacteria

Send a sample my way and I will tell you exactly what you are dealing with.

Hit a spot with h202, ph off. If that area is clear or better tomorrow then it should be cyno no?

If you have been dosing h2o2 with no noticeable change (or getting worse) It's not cyanobacteria.
Continuing to dose is prohibitive in this situation.

Apologies have been dealing with some family issues have not had a chance to check in. The 125 that i was doaing is still clear of cyano and all the livestockis thriving, dinos are starting to die off as well. I have done nothing additional as far as dosing my tank, I have however returned my gfo and carbon to the mix also new Protien skimmer.
Now for those that have been using the H2O2 for more than 6 days I recommend getting a confirmation that you have Cyano, spirulina does develope a very similar looking mat and untill you look at the mats structure side by side its almost impossible to determine which is which. As @twilliard has discussed in this thread H2O2 has little to no effect on Spirulina again they both create a very similar looking mat and is very difficult to tell apart with the eye.
So the big question is as if im reading everything correctly spirulina feed the coral and is a beneficial element to the tank, is it really worth removing by a chemical treatment or would it be better to increase filtration minimize feeding and let the spirulina stay in the tank. With the focus on concentration and keeping the numbers low enough that it does not mat. Keeping a sustainable food source for your coral with minimal care.

It is my desire to find solutions for today's common problems.
I will admit the information being obtained by members tanks expands on my original topic.
I am trying to decide how I want to approach these issues and make a clear statement on solutions.

Major update for my followers!

If you have been dosing h2o2 and have not been seeing improvement please read!


I have conclusively found through members tanks that there is another form of life that looks identical to the eye in your tank.
H2O2 WILL NOT TOUCH IT
It's called spirulina
I have been getting samples in from members tanks where h2o2 is not reducing the spread of these mats.
Under the scope it is NOT cyanobacteria
Now you can have a combination of both but h2o2 will ONLY treat for cyanobacteria

If you are in a situation that h2o2 is having no change I highly recommend you send me a sample to verify what you are exactly dealing with.
As of right now h2o2 will NOT harm spirulina unless in mass doses.

I used H2O2 for probably a good month w/o any real change. I have now discontinued. But for those with cyanobacteria and who are concerned about dosing H2O2, I was dosing upwards of 10ml 2x a day within the return pump flow and never had an issue. This was for a tank with approximately 75 gallons total water volume.

Now off to determine my next steps since it is conclusive that my tank has spirulina.

Yes this finding will help a lot of people frustrated that it won't go away.
I am trying to culture this also but is posing to be a challenge.
