I have a all in one tank with three over flow chambers and it’s been running since May, everything is fine, but I want to add sand to the DT and maybe some more surface area into one of the chambers and do away with the protein skimmer, also in the back I have filter floss and a bag of chemi pure elite. What are my options with adding sand and what could I add to the back chambers. As of now I’m not even running the skimmer it’s just displace water.

Just curious why don't you run the skimmer? Anyway you can get something like a small marinepure block and break or cut it to fit in one of those chambers. It has a crazy amount of surface area for bacteria to grow if thats what you mean.

That is a thought. I don’t run it because well I don’t seem to need it. But I don’t have much for livestock right now.

Will my tank go through a cycle again?

No, it will just add more space for bacteria to colonize. A cycle happens when there is a lack of bacteria. If you suddenly remove a bunch of your rock your tank would have a mini cycle.

I guess that was my actual question with all this. I don’t want to have a crazy ammonia spike.

Yeah nope, as long as you aren't removing bacteria you shouldn't have any ammonia problems whatsoever.
