Hey All, Peter here, been reading R2R over the last year, thought I'd say hello and thanks for all the great posts.
I setup my first reef tank sometime in the early 90s, when the only information available was from books and your LRS. It was a 40 gallon tank with tons of hang-on equipment and the largest canister filter I could afford. I had some damsels, a tomato clown and a dog-face puffer, and a snowflake moray eel for good measure. Tank eventually crashed from massive parasite infestation. Lord only know what my water parameters were like back then.
Last year I started researching reefing and I was pleasantly surprised to find so much information online. I especially liked the BRS channel on youtube. So after months of researching I decided to setup a 4 foot tank with a custom plumbed sump. Cycled my tank for 3 months and added some started with some Ocellaris. Platinum gladiator what? Holy captive breeding, mutant broadway show going on in that space. Brought the Ocellaris back to LFS after a few months. Currently lightly stocked with pair of Percula, one Gold-stripe maroon, Mimc and Scopas tang, two nems and some blennies
Nine months into cycling the tank and I'm in the 'ugly tank phase'. Thought I could skip that phase with good water parameters, but nope. Everything has been manual until now and it's time to start automating and unfortunately more $$$. Going with filter fleece roller as I'm not a fan of filter socks. I've been using filterfloss which works great, but needs changing too often.
Goal is a low maintenance 5 year tank with a few fish and mostly coral and inverts.
Anywho, that's my journey in a nutshell. Look forward to sharing with you guys.
Happy Long Weekend!!
