Back glass color

Hi all: The back of my tank was painted light blue by a previous owner. I acquired the tank when my old tank sprung a leak, and so I had to set it up immediately. Now I wish to change it to black, however the tank is up and running, and there is NO access to the back of the tank as it is built in. My question is are there any ideas that anyone might share? TIA

Sounds like you know the answer unfortunately.

If it is painted and not a film applied to the back, you are SOL. You'd need to scrape thr paint off and have full access to the back to do so. If its a vinyl wrap, you may be able to peel and remove and add a new one.

With the latter, peeling will be easy. Applying a black vinyl neatly without bubbles will be near impossible if the tank is filled and on a wall

There’s a guy who put acrylic inserts on some of the inside walls of his tank and he would pull them out periodically to clean (or replace?) the glass in the tank to make cleaning easier and to keep stuff from growing unchecked on the inside of the tank. If you can find a way to put a black acrylic insert inside the tank you could probably do that yourself and have a black background.

That's a good fix for this kind of situation! Simple and effective

I used Krylon Blue Water Based Enamel, before setting up my 65. Big mistake. Started coming off in Patches. Used Citrus Strip. Taped the Glass Top closed, and taped bottom plastic molding, and protected the back of the stand with heavy paper. Pumped air in from outside, also used fans to ventilate. No harm done to Corals or the Fish. Painted the back with Rustoleum Black. I taped off the overflow glass. Made a mistake with that, missed an area to the Aquarium. Used Black Electrical Tape, to cover the gap. BTW, I heard that this stuff will eat plastics, that’s why I used blue masking tape and paper.

You are correct, I'm just hoping someone has previously done this, and might offer a suggestion or 9....lol

Yeah....don't use a water base paint for water things.

Our friendly neighborhood Amazon has black acrylic in a bunch of different sizes.

I’ve put these inside running tanks for a back wall.

Depending on if your tank is rimmed or rimless, just need a way to secure it.

Bottom is in the sand, top with either a tiny dab of silicone (above the waterline, of course) or on my rimless tank, just a bit of clear packing tape over the edge
