I had a 50 gallon back in the day with hobs around 70 lbs of live rock and 6" of black sand with pc lighting and it all flourished this was back in 2004 or so.

back in the day... WOW. Let me tell ya. I love to look at old tank photos.

when I first got into SW, I had a 20 tall with one of those eclipse top filters. Blue back, I had a snowflake eel, purple tang, percula clowns and I am sure I tried a CBB. lost everythign fairly quickly. LOL. for the longest time in that tank I kept a small HUMA HUMA trigger. in teh 29 I had I tried to keep dwarf lions. :sorry:

then it was a reef tank berlin style. NO pumps, just an air wand in the back for circulation and Normal output florescent bulbs. I did manage to keep a frogspawn and seahorses.

that was all in college. what a trip... I knew NOTHING and the internet was just barely starting.

Then came my 75. for years, it was drab. just fish and rock. could not get coral to grow. I had a canister filter and an UG filter with CRUSHED CORAL:faint2:

went to PC lights, that helped alot, but it still was Meh....

then I found my way into MTRC. BIG eye opener. that was 7 or 8 years ago. built a canopy, got a sump.

then added Ro/DI water to the mix for the top off. Keep in mind, the tank in the photo below didnt get a water change for 4 years.

Tank rocked, sold it off and now I have the one I have now.

As I said it all flourished everything was huuuuge!

Had the tank for 4 years the tang i had since he was a wee little fishy and he cycled the tank for me lol all i ever used was tap water and hobs!

And i can say that back then coral vital by mark weiss was amazing!!!! I think it has changed since then as i seen a bottle and it didn't even look the same as before color and consistency wise.
