Following, I was considering getting a $4,000 home generator installed but would like to know what other people use.

I'm thinking a pc batterie back up..that might work depending on how long you are out of power. Staples sells them for around 175.$

No UPS for a computer is going to power much in your tank for very long if you include lights and especially a heater in the mix. It will take a bank of deep-cycle marine batteries to do the job. You can however take a standard UPS, if it is rated for the load, and tie it in to that bank of batteries and it will work.

I have a generator but it won't do much if I'm not home.

I actually use a computer APC battery backup which lets me run one heater and two powerheads for about 45 minutes. I also bought a portable generator which I can start up which will run my entire tank for as long as I want to keep it filled up with gas. This is all based on somebody being home when the power goes off lol.

Yea I would like something to turn on automatically. I have a nano. So small heater, filter, and if poss the skimmer. If I'm asleep, I need it to fire up. Didn't know if batteries say at Office Depot were and different or less effective that say those on bulk reek site

Don't overthink it you'll end up spending more than you think you would. I have separate battery backup systems for each of my vortex pumps and then my wireless adapter and apex 12v adapter on another. I've also got my router on a battery backup as well and it serves it's purpose if anything happens.

what about if you only run the return pump? I have a dc pump that does not draw a lot of power but would love to keep it running in case of a power outtage
