Backflow restrictors for sump

From what I've heard they get pretty nasty if not maintained well and also have a somewhat high failure rate. Some are better than others but I don't know many using them. Best of luck:)

Hello,

I was wondering why people don't use backflow restrictors in their sump plumbing if overflow is an issue?
Because if you use these on the return pump plumbing they will eventually fail, and you don't want these on the overflow for the same reason.

And it's because they can fail. It's a safer bet to make sure that you don't have enough water flowing down into the sump to overflow it in case of a power outage. If the check valve fails(and they will eventually) you will have water all over the floor.

Drilling a small hole in the return line inside the tank as a syphon break so not too much water back flows would be a better option IMO. That and having room in your sump for the back flow. Anything that moves will fail at some point.

Thanks for all input. I have been using them for years, although I do change them out every other year. Not expensive and only takes about 15 min.

Ball valves and check valves are popular but you can

People do use them. I have some on mine just to slow backflow into the sump during water changes. But I would never rely on them to keep water from backflowing that would otherwise overflow the sump and ruin my floors.

I have been using one of these for years with no issue. link with no issue. It has an easy clean out for maintenance.

I use them but only for convenience and not to prevent a flood. Make sure your sump can handle the water that could drain down from the display and you don't really need them.

Welcome to the party.
