And it's because they can fail. It's a safer bet to make sure that you don't have enough water flowing down into the sump to overflow it in case of a power outage. If the check valve fails(and they will eventually) you will have water all over the floor.

People do use them. I have some on mine just to slow backflow into the sump during water changes. But I would never rely on them to keep water from backflowing that would otherwise overflow the sump and ruin my floors.Thanks for all input.
