Do I need a background for a 10 gallon aquarium? If so do I just put it on the back or on 3 sides?

That is all up to your personal preference. I would take tank location into consideration in doing the sides. I like to be able to view a tank from the sides as well if possible.

Many people run tanks with no background at all!

Good question! Some of the reason for the background is for looks and some of it is to provide a calmer space for the fish. Many people use backgrounds and many people do not - it will depend on your fish and your preference. Good luck!

I just want sure that the fish are happy and not stressing about their own reflection

Would you happen to know if clowns need them? I saw one of mine dancing with itself the other day

I really like clowns but some times clowns do weird things. I usually add a background to one side of my clown tanks, but it isn't necessary - clowns are usually pretty adaptable.
