Hey guys do i really need backround for reef aquarium?

Welcome and hopefully you enjoy it here at R2R. We have wonderful people and tons of information. The reason for a background is to hide wires ect hanging behind tank. It gives a aquarium a more finished look imo. Keeps focus in tank and not what's behind it when viewing. But by no means do you have to have a background.

You don't "need" one but most who chose not to regret it later. Like the above comment said its nice to have so that the wires/pipes/hoses all stay hidden. It allows the focus to stay on what's in the tank while viewing it. Pick up a can of black Plasti Dip and paint it. If you don't like it peel it right off.

A matter of taste I've had blue before and looked great. This time I've used black and think it looks great also. I do think black may show the pop of corals little more because of the contrast. You could always get a background at lfs think they have plastic ones that are blue one side and black on the other and try one out then flip it to decide. Ours being black hides the center overflow seeing it's black also.

I have painted my reef tanks both dark blue and black.....really no preference either way. They both look good. Do you have any type of internal overflow? If so, paint the background black to match and hide that....otherwise it is a personal preference.

I've seen many beautiful tanks with a black background but I prefer to paint the tanks with a metallic blue color. It's partially translucent and gives the tank a deeper looking background. At least until the Coraline algae takes over.

My first reef tank's background was blue and it looked awesome when it was clean. Now my new tank has a black background and I like it better. Keeps you more focused on looking at the corals and seems to make the colors pop more. I used Krylon Fusion on the outside of the back.
