5 month old new setup. Just getting back in after a 2 year break because of a dino out break.

Had a HA problem that’s finally going away. The tank was just starting to look good and I was getting it dialed in and BAM.

Doing my water change tonight and without a doubt Dino’s are starting to show up. I imagine in a week or so they will be completely taking over.

Where did these come from. I kept reefs for 10 years and never heard of this now my last two tanks have had them.

Yes I used all new equipment. Nothing from the old tank. Crazy!

Start here. You can get your tank back. Good luck!

Dino's are everywhere, including carried in the upper atmosphere. You can't keep them out of an aquarium, it just isn't possible. I don't have any visible in my system, but I can easily find several strains of dino's using a microscope.

The key, imo, is not to fight them. It is to create conditions that other planktonic creatures like better. I would recommend any and/or all of the following. Add live rock from a healthy established system. Add rotifers, copepods, amphipods, and live phytoplankton.

Oh... and make sure you don't drive phosphates too low! The most common strains of dinoflagellates can dominate in a phosphate deficient environment. I used to be able to get dino's to come and go by adjust flow through my GFO.

This is great advice. I fought mine the hard way and mistakingly thought my dinos needed low phosphates... oops

I feel your pain. I had them in my 420 never previously. Don't give up. I think a big contributor to them is silicates personally. I tried everything listed in all those threads nothing really worked except this. I would personally recommend dosing n03 keeping it present for corals. Order a DI/Silicate buster DI for your RO system. And heres the controversial part I like running phosban it also takes silicates out of the water. This worked for me. I did a lot of reading and all diatom brown stuff needs silicates. I have ran a very small amount of phosban since and had zero alage problems or dinos for about 9 months so far. Who knows about tomorrow. I always believe running gfo with tank problems is the way to go. The stuff dies then releases into water and gets taken back up. GFO removes it while its dieing off.

Well after reading through some of the above threads it looks like people are having some success getting rid of them. That’s encouraging at least.

I tend to error on the side of patience and let the tank work itself out. I’ll give that a try first.

Thanks for the info everyone.
