Bad hobby terms.

Off topic....,..

"Hair cut". Technically, cutting more than one hair strand. Should be "Hairs cut"! Lol

"My calcium is at xxx". I didn't ask about YOUR calcium, I asked about the tank's calcium level!!

The "alkalinity" thing bothers me too, but it's a common term 'round here so I just follow suit. Maybe I'll stop that.

Ok. I have to say it and tick off some folks: RIMLESS, especially when mentioned in a haughty tone. As if owning a rimless tank is the ultimate goal in life and it makes you better than reefers with rimmed tanks.

THIS!!!!!! Biggest pet peeve ever.
I can't help but slide in a comment non-chalant about the "trimless" tank. Plus, trimless tanks suck anyway - the water comes out of the tank with 120x turnover - ridiculous! Hahaha. One-piece polished Starphire eurobrace is where it's at you cheap "rimless" folk!!! Haha...I'm just kidding...kind of. ;)

Oh don't forget "Starphire" often misspelled as "Starfire" when most low-iron glass isn't PPG Starphire brand anyway, but a cheaper Chinese import. Hehe.

Ok I'm done...for now.

Arbitrarily giving designer coral names. We all know what Utter Chaos are. We know what a Green Slimer looks like. That's fine, but nowadays every dealer gives every single piece a crazy name, often naming two identical pieces something entirely different. If you have something iconic, or really awesome... that's fine. But now, just some random, average millepora is a Nuclear Zombie Wasabi and those random blue and pink zoanthids are now Mystic Mermaid Vaginas. I saw a plain red BTA in a local sale thread, and the guy selling it decided to name it a "Funburst" BTA. I guess he figured that justified a $200 price tag for a $50 nem. Don't get me started on naming your own coral after yourself.

I also love how so many people find it SO difficult to take a picture of something they're trying to sell, or identify. If you only have actinics on, your picture is going to look like crap. Turn on a few white lights and you can get a decent picture with a disposable camera. You want someone to buy that baby mushroom for $175, take 15 seconds to adjust your lights.

P.S. I'm calling dibs on the "Mystic Mermaid Vaginas" name! ;)

That's a glorious name and I'm ashamed I didn't think of it a long time ago. You're totally right. It seems a lot of us are fed up with the stupid names, I thought I was one of the only ones that wanted only true names or at least common names used again.

People wanting advice on last fish to add. Usually meaning the most aggressive fish to add last. Folks, if you are going to be in the hobby any time at all it won't be the last fish. You'll have losses and new additions. That six-line wrasse you added "last" will have plenty of new fish to pester.

This is an unusual amount of negativity. I hope this thread is very cathartic for you all.
Nothing like a good "rant" thread every once in a while, eh? Can't say I disagree with many of the examples but a few left me a bit perplexed
(Plexliglass tank) plexiglass is a brand of a type of clear plastic, in my opinion a terrible type of plastic to use for a tank compared to polycarbonate or other types
I get the "Kleenex" analogy, but Plexiglas-G is actually one of the only 2 brands of acrylic that should be used (IMO). Polycarbonate should not really be used to build tanks, for several reasons.
terms like "Algae scrubber"
Just curious as to how this made the list? I can imagine a few possibilities but don't want to assume what you meant...
The idiotic drug references..."cooking rock"
Cooking rock is a proper term for a specific process, I never took that as a drug reference. But now every time I use it I'll have I picture in my head, thanks

Probably the most dangerous and overused terms that bug me to the ends of the earth will always be "cooking" or "baking" rock.. Both of which if taken literally can be deadly! You are doing neither, your soaking rock. It is not proper term for a process, it is horrible term for a completely non heat requiring process.

Plexiglass instead of plexiglas. plexiglas instead of acrylic. lexan instead of polycarbonate. band aid instead of bandage. Levi's instead of jeans. ick instead of ich. ich instead of crypto. ich at all when referring to saltwater tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anemones do not have a foot, base, shaft or plate. seen instead of saw. double negatives. 1 lb per gallon. cycling with live fish or dead shrimp. using 2x4s for stands!!!!!!

I think I strayed from the topic a little. oh well. :)

You have that backwards. Plexiglas is great for tanks. polycarbonate......not so much.

Just wanted to hear what terms in this hobby drive you nuts.
A few that bother me are

(Show tank for sale) what determines what a show tank is. Any tank that is shown is a show tank.

(Plexliglass tank) plexiglass is a brand of a type of clear plastic, in my opinion a terrible type of plastic to use for a tank compared to polycarbonate or other types

( custom tank) if it was mass produced it's not custom
I was cruising Craigslist when I seen these words used so I figure there are more dose not have to be things for sale.
