I have a fairly new tank. I added fish directly to the DT at first not realizing I should have quarantined them. Well....I have some ich show up on one of my fish....so I took a trip and got myself a hospital tank set up. I moved all of the fish from my system to the QT so I can treat everyone at once and let the DT sit fallow for 6 weeks (or however long I need to, 8 weeks?)

Here is my question. I want to add one more fish to my tank. Would it be a bad idea to just go ahead and get him and put him in the QT with the other fish? That way, I'll have the fish I want for my DT and they will all be done in the QT at the same time and I can tear down the QT for the time being (we didn't really have a great place to put it, don't want to keep it set up)

You could do that yes.

It would depend on how large your QT is, how established the biofilter is etc.

Also depends on type of fish and treatment plan as some fish do better with different types of meds etc.

How big is your current QT?

Current fish list?

Want to add... List?

To play 100% safe proper fallow time is 76 days for ich.

QT is 20 gallons. I have 2 small clowns, 1 green clown goby, 1 firefish. I wanted to add a royal gramma. Figure I'll be doing water changes every day/every other day. I have a HOB filter on the QT and put a sponge from my DT in there, hoping that will help with the biological filtration some, as well as some water from the DT. It's been up for about a week, but I just added the fish today.

I'm using Cupramine to treat the ich.

Id say you will be fine adding the royal Gramma.

I'd do it asap so you can ramp up copper slowly in order to ease the fish into the 30 day period at therapuetic level.

Cupramine is suggested to be dosed in two doses 48 hours apart following the instructions on the bottle.

I personally would take the total dosage and divide it by 10. Then do two doses per day for 5 days. As long as you are sure it's ich and not velvet you are dealing with.

Velvet does require therapuetic level within 48 hours. Just FYI. Which I would still break up into multiple smaller doses over 2 days to reach the therapeutic level.

Good luck!

+1 ^^^
Only suggestion I have is to add a bag of Seachem Matrix or Fluval BioMax soaked in Dr. Tim's/Bio-Spira into the HOB if there is room. Do you have a Seachem Ammonia alert badge in your QT?

Sounds like you’ve got it covered pretty well. How big is your DT? If I’m not mistaken the gramma can be a little aggressive. Just an FYI, since I know most places say they are peaceful

Thanks guys. I have a 30 gallon long for my DT. Good to know about the gramma. Would you suggest something different, or just keep an eye on it?

And yes, I have the ammonia alert badge. Also have a bubbler going in there. I took some of the Matrix out of the DT too and threw it in the back of the HOB. The original bag of matrix i had had too much to fit in my media basket, so I took some out and saved them. I took some out of my DT and then replaced it with the unused stuff.

Consider adding a small powerhead aimed up toward the surface where it is actively rippling the surface. It will provide a higher rate of O2 exchange than a bubbler. Especially useful when dosing meds that lower O2 levels like Prazipro.

I’m not too sure about how the gramma would do in that tank with the other companions. Maybe someone with more expertise could offer their input. #reefsquad
