so i just went and checked my gfi box and whatcha know!!...... turned the power off and that little rascal did not come back on!!!! THANK YOU cdness. this will be changed in the near future.

Installing a gfi is not hard. If you guys are building your own systems I'm sure you can handle it. Just make sure to put everything on the line side of the gfi. That way if it does trip it doesn't shut off all the outlets down stream of it. And turn the power off when you do it.

Siphon break, separate return chamber for pump and a siphon break and check on and off levels. Mark them with tape. I have max on and max off lines on sump. Only way I can flood is if drain lines or pump lines break. Or heaven forbid my tanks crack.

I just started the build but I am considering doing that, I actually have an in-line check valve for my return but thats exactly what went wrong. One of the clamps holding it in place broke.

Sorry to hear.

FWIW when I was being trained as a electronics technician the said all electronics run off of smoke which is held inside. When they release that smoke the electronics can no longer function.

to your build IMHO and I hope it helps, you need to adjust your system (display and sump) so they don't overflow without any valves. That is very possible as basically you are pumping water from one container to another. My problem at first is I didn't test for a overflow failure (blockage, loss of siphon, etc). By adjusting the height of the return pump intake and the water levels in the display and sump, the pump should run out of water before the display floods. But it did take me a couple of floods to figure that out.

Best of luck and may this be your last flood.

ever!!!!!

Yes sorry to hear!

Be careful with these... If power goes out for some reason, they may not turn back on. Power loss triggers it to shut down so you need to be there to turn it back on.

You should really look at the permanent ones that go in the wall box.

Very true when power goes out they will not always turn back on. I'm speaking from testing it out. Bought one fro Home Depot and hooked it up turned off the breaker box and when I turned the breaker back on the tank never started back up. So I brought it back its a waste of money.

Thanks everyone. is it possible to wire one of those float switches to an electrical outlet so that if the water level is too high in the tank or tooo low in the sumo it will cut off the power to the pump?

Sorry to hear that, really stinks you had to go through all that but at least you didn't kill any livestock which is a good thing.

Get a controller like a reefkeeper lite. It includes this functionality out of the box (just needs the float sensor). You can trigger an event to shut off the outlet that powers the pump if the float activates. Or you can have it trigger an event if it is too low.

Does the apex aquacontroller do the same?

This is the GFCI I use they can be bought at Lowes for fairly cheap.

Sorry about the ich or whatever it is I really hate fish disease identification.

It all started with a coral beauty and white spots which I assumed were Ich but then she lost coloration and started swimming at the surface grasping for air and she died. It all happened in 2 days, then my butterfly fish went trough the same exact process. He died last night but one of my Columbian sharks has white stuff all over him, its almost greyish, right now I have him in a separate tank and he is looking almost yellow. The rest of my fish are in the main tank and show no signs of stress or sickness. I treated the tank with malachite green and Formalin for the past two days.
