Iam ordering a baffle kit for a refigum for my marine x60.2 sump, i have the quantum nyos 120 skimmer recommended water height is 8.5 inches so 9 inches height. the baffle kit is 12.9 inches high. the guy can make it shorter, but he's trying to convince me you don't need to make it shorter for water height it's going to be the same as it's only a divider need advice here thanks.

Yep, agree with "the guy".....keep the baffle high and simply put your skimmer on a shelf to the proper height. Easy to use egg crate (light diffuser) to make a shelf.

Here's an example of an egg crate shelf held together with zip ties.....under the biopellet reactor:

He said he can cut it shorter, why should i bother with a skimmer shelf if he can make the kit shorter?

Make sure that whenever you decide your water level, you take into account the amount of water backwash that will come during a power loss.

More water volume .
Filter socks are 14" long (7" ones are useless)
Easier to baffle splashes if there is some water in your sump you can dip your pipe in.
Your return pump will want some water over it so it doesn't pull air.
If you use probes you'll need enough water to keep them submerged.
If you put your heater in your sump it'll be bad if it gets dry.
I forget any?

So its better to leave the height of it the same 12.5 inches, and have my skimmer if needed on a riser?

I actuallt decided not to cut it and have my skimmer on a riser if needed is that a safer option u think?

I DIY a lot of stuff - one thing I learned early on was to look at existing products and try to figure out why they’re designed as they are. These baffle kits have been around for a long time and I think if it was a good idea to make them skimmer height they would be.

I’ve made a bunch a sumps and I’ve always optimized on water volume so I’ve not really looked into running minimal water volume so although I have a lot of reasons to recommend a standard design, I don’t want to discourage you from trying something you think may be better.
