My understanding is you bake 2 1/4 cups of soda for one hour at 300 degrees to make one gallon. My question is how much do you dose of this mixture? Would add the same amount as you would comerial buffers?

Use the calculator on the Bulk Reef Supply website.

Use it just like you would use B-Ionic or BRS alk solution.....same thing.....sodium carbonate.

It is also determined which one you use based on your PH of your tank as per Randy Homes Farley articles: One will raise PH and the other will lower PH. I have a lower PH range 7.8 to 8.0 so I dose it with sodium carbonate (I make by baking "Sodium Bicarbonate" in oven). If your PH is higher than I think you just dose Sodium Bicarbonate from what I remember in the article. I believe the articles were on Advanced Aquarist Magazine and Reefkeeping Online Magazine.

Run test for your KH (alkalinity) while dosing, and do it at night when your pH levels are at their highest.
If you have a power head on the top of you tank, mixing in the top layer of water 24/7 your pH should be stable at 8.2-8.4 More surface agitation= good pH

IME, the lowering effect of plain baking soda is negligible. Definitely not worth running the oven for an hour. (Unless it's already hot from baking halloween cookies!)

Would be interesting to hear someone else's experience too!

I agree. I gave up on the baking part long ago. I dump one heaping cup of baking soda into a gallon of RO/DI and drip small amounts hourly at night using BRS dosing pumps on a Reef Keeper Lite multitimer.
