Excuse the poor image but this is basically a brain coral that is the shape of a ball. My question is does this take on this shape because the rock it is in is also the shape of a ball? Or Should I be looking to get a certain type/species that forms a ball usually. So basically, are there corals like these that grow into balls or should I just make a ball shaped rock and let a coral encrust over it and which kind should i use that has the brain look. @C. I think theres a few different types of favias.I have one like yours, that started in a small ball form and now its a large softball size. I have a few of the smaller mouth/corallite favias that are encruster's. Like the day glow and the fascination favias. they grow to the shape of the rocks their on as long as they get light.Hope this helps

Pic is pretty rough, could be a lot of things, favia, plesiastrea, phymastrea, goniastera etc etc

Need a better pic to be able to give any sort of accurate guess

Are there certain colors that naturally take a ball shape or is it always the shape of the rock, I see certain brains that look circular a lot which makes me think some do make spheres.

I was reading a recent thread where someone would take small piece of rock and create a round shape and then put whatever favia type coral on top of that. Basically letting it grow around the round base.
