Ball valve for return line

i just bought a Reef Octopus Varios-6 pump. It’s way overkill for my present tank but I’m planning on getting a bigger tank soon. I know I can keep the controller in a slower mode but can I also use a ball valve to keep at say 600 GPH.
Will it hurt the pump

Using a ball valve on the return side of a pump is similar to adding head height, so no it wouldn't.
