We purchased a mated pair of Banggai Cardinals today. When we got home, there was a clump of eggs in the bag. We're guessing the male had them in his mouth and spit them out when he was bagged.

We poured them into the tank near the fish, but haven't seen him pick them up yet. Any chance they'll hatch if he doesn't mouth brood them?

Not likely, if I recall correctly the sack has to have a constant flow of water around it....this is a great book to have: https://www.amazon.com/Banggai-Cardinalfish-Captive-Breeding-Natural/dp/1883693357
Thanks. I'll have to check that out sometime soon.
A little later, we found a hermit having a meal on the eggs. Hopefully they'll like the tank and feel comfortable enough to breed again soon.
Looks like we'll be setting up a breeder tank soon just in case. Maybe we can have a successful round.

If you keep them fed and happy they will continue to breed....my lfs jad a breeding pair in thier coral tank and the offspring would end up in the sump, the store would sell them for $5 each...they were super fun to raise.

My wife is making sure they are fed...lol. It took a few days, but they are out of hiding and spend a good portion of their day out swimming and cruising the tank.

When we bought this pair, the girl that helped us said she's been trying to get small ones in for six months, but couldn't. I'm curious as to why suppliers don't have them if they are this easy to breed. As for $5 each, can you share which lfs is selling them at that price, or was this a blast from the past?

Wow, just noticed you're in Knoxville......Aquatic Marine in N. Knox but their pair hasn't breed in about a year, not sure why. I know for a fact they can get small sized captive breed from their supplier.

Yes we're in the Knoxville area, Monroe County actually (I grew up in Maryville and my wife in Madisonville).

This pair came from Aquatic Marine (love that place and been going there since it was in the warehouse off Debusk Ln). This pair was a trade-in apparently and I took it they hadn't been there but a few days. I only saw one banggai in the coral tank (it was a good sized fish), hope I just didn't see the other and something didn't happen to the mate. It kept hanging out under a rock ledge the hour we were there.

I didn't catch the girl's name, but she said she had ordered 13 small ones for a customer and had been waiting for six months due to their supplier not having any. I'm not trying to argue by any means, just sharing what I was told (still think it odd myself).

Oh no, I didn't take it that way....perhaps I shouldn't have spoken so surely, I wasn't aware their supplier was having issues with acquiring their tank raised cardinals.
