I bought a pair of banggai cardinals about 5 months ago. 1 of them did not last long so the other has been unpaired for over 4 months. This morning I looked at my tank and he has a mouth full of eggs. Seems like a long time to be alone then all of a sudden have a bunch of eggs. Where did he get the eggs? Are they unfertilized?

Those are unfertilized eggs. Cardinals don't store sperm, but rather the eggs would be fertilized externally. Without a mate, they won't get fertilized.

I thought about that. But he said the female died four months ago. Where did he get the eggs?
My tank has a similar problem. My copperband is un-paired and yet she laid this!!!!

Then were sexed incorrectly and it was the male that died. Those are definitely bangaii eggs.

I also thought about that. But the male is the one who incubates the eggs which is why he has a larger mouth.
I agree with you, but it is weird.
