I added two banggai cardinal fish to my tank a couple days back and within 30 hours they were both dead :( I have two ocellaris clowns in the tank that have been doing well the two weeks prior to the cardinals being added and are still doing well today.

I did a slow acclimation for the cardinals fish but for whatever reason they didn't make it after I put them into the tank.

Any suggestions for the future to make sure this doesn't happen again or is this just part of the hobby?

Thanks.

Hi there! I'm sorry for your loss :( My advice for the future would be to consider a QT. Here's more info on that and how to do it: How to Quarantine

I had same experience with some cards I got from petco. First 2 just started kind of lisplessly floating right after I put in QT. Died a short time later. I got two more that seemed to do ok for a couple of days then same kind of lispless floating. Then gone. I got some from lfs that did much better and stayed in qt for close to 4 weeks and are now spitting out fry in main tank.

although it is just my opinion...I will never buy a cardinal fish or a firefish. Both of them seem extremely fragile for some reason.
I had a firefish for 2 days before it died.

IME Banggai cardinals are a fairly hardy fish. I would check your parameters and use qt for future additions
