hmmm.. I'm really looking forward to seeing now if the ones I'm gonna pick up will eat "dry" food.

Good luck. I tried to feed mine pellets soaked in mysis juice (can't get any closer to being mysis) and it still just looked at it and watched it float by.

Why do you only feed dry foods? Fish need to be fed a large variety of food to stay healthy.

I do feed my BTA's frozen 2-3x/week. I guess I can also feed the fish frozen every other day. LoL. I have pellets on an auto feeder so it's easier for me to feed dry food.

Definitely not good for them to only eat one thing all the time. My fish get several different types of food daily.

I really didn't have any problem with feeding the pair I had, frozen brine and mysis.
I would also look into this stuff from the link in a previous post.

When I mentioned pellets, I only said it because I figured that would be a goal of any captive breeding program. ( to get the spawn off it's normal live foods and on to something easier to feed and store.)
When I had mine, they were placed in a 135 gallon softy reef with a dozen other fish. To tell you the truth I don't remember how agressive they were when eating in the 135.
It wasn't untill, one night I happen to turn around and look ( tank 18" behind couch ) at the tank and actually see the 2 banggai's next to each other when suddenly the egg ball appeared and the male gulpping it in his mouth.
I started doing a some research on them and found that web page I mentioned. No one else knew much about them.
Sure enough 4 weeks later ( give or take a few days ) I found 4 babies in the sump. They didn't survive long.
So I caught the parents and moved them to a 20 gallon tank and kept them for another 6 months or so, with 4 more spawns in which about 30 survived to semi adults. I usually gave them away, or used them for trades.

Marvin, mine never ate pellets either but since she's been in the QT for months and Im not feeding as much she got hungry enough and eats pellets now. Ive had her 5 years now and this is the first time she has eaten any pellets. Ive tried to pair her three times without success so far. She lays eggs once in a while and leaves the eggs laying on corals.

I could not keep any Banji alive even if they were eating at the LFS. Once they got into my tank, they slowly deminished and I never lose any fish. Once I bought some tank raised Banji, I never had any more issues. JMO

okay gang.. went to the Tropicorium today and they got me my pair. I had some reservation on them picking out a pair out of the 100's they have but at the same time had my trust on them since they've been breeding them for so long and they have a very experienced staff working there (Thanks Brian). I was paying a good amount for them so I wanted to make sure I brought home a pair. I've been reading and watching vids about Banggai's for the past week or so and the only way of sexing them that haven't been proven wrong is counting their vents. the best way (from what I've read) to get the vents to show up pretty good is when their bellies are full. that was another concern I had (from reading and researching) was getting them to eat. found out that wasn't an issue at all. they ate Hikari mysis and brine shrimp pretty well for their first day. I'm still hoping to get them to eat pellets in time. with the help of the Canon T2i and 100mm macro lens, I was able to get close enough to take some decent pics to count the vents, even though they were hanging out in the back area of the tank. at first I thought I saw both of them having two vents. obviously, this had me concerned. to be really sure, I fed them some more and took another round of pics. the 2nd round of pics I was able to see one vent on the bigger Banggai and two vents on the smaller Banggai.
again, from reading and researching, some more characteristics of identifying male from female...
*** male (longer dorsal fin that can extend past the anal fin
- problem here sometimes, the dorsal fin is damaged.. in my case, the one with one vent (suppose to be female) has the longer dorsal fin. both are nice and long but the female's is slightly longer
*** male has a bulldog face (square); female (more round)
- I can see this with the one with two vents (suppose to be male) so that's a good sign
*** female has a darker stomach area (sign of eggs developing or ready to come out)
- I can see this also being true to the ones I have.
so all in all, I'm pretty confident that I do have a pair as many signs point to it. we will find out in the next few days/weeks. but for now, I can sleep knowing that I'm 90% sure I have a pair. again, kudos to Tropicorium for an awesome experience. I will keep you guys posted on their progress.

The square jaw line was one of the ways we use to try and identify the males from the females.
That Hikari mysis is pretty good.
My pipefish really goes after it.

Thanks man. It's amazing how excited and anxious you get when adding something new to the tank. Excited to see the newcomer in the tank and at the same time anxious about how the newcomer is gonna do, whether it be a fish, coral, or invert.
