Hey everyone, my new bare bottom 120 is just about done with its cycle. Overall, I plan on going SPS dominant, but I'd like to have a few of my favorite LPS and zoas mixed in. This is my first bare bottom tank and it does look a bit off to me so far. I think I'd enjoy the look of the bare bottom tank more if the bottom glass was covered in some time of encrusting coral (monti, favia, cyphatrea or even zoas). So my main question is, what corals have you had success growing on the bottom glass? Please post pics if you've got em. Thanks.

I don't personally have a bare bottom tank, but when I went to the LiveAquaria facility, they have a huge SPS display tank that is bare bottom and is absolutely stunning. They have a bunch of encrusting Montipora on the bottom.

That is a sweet tank! I've got some decisions to make. I'd like to just buy one killer frag pack, then scatter them on the bottom glass and let them grow in.

How long did that take to grow like that[emoji54]

Not long. It's a fast grower. I had it sitting on the sand and it never did anything but once I went BB it took off. I was knocking it down off the sides weekly with a mag scraper.

This war coral eventually ended up running up the rocks and the side glass.

I just went barebottom.. going to the LFS tmw to look for this exact coral.. need a frag of this asap.. love the red..

that doesnt really need alot of flow does it?? i have my flow low right now.. so my btas stay put.. i recently cranked the flow and one of them started to wander.. ....

if you look at my tank, i have a gyre 130 top right horizontal and a icecap 3k vertical on the right side to keep back clean.. the right side of my tank is full powerhead central.. i even got a lil nano koraila back right corner for the front to back to stay clean.. lol so most my detritus is pushed to the front for easy vac.. i been doing alot of rock rework and theres alot of detritus just from moving rock around.. gotta do a quick vac to sock before i put in any new coral on the bb..

both gyres are on 10% right now.. lol.. but them being horizontal and vertical is getting the job done.. im really just gonna go for a zoa dominated tank.. anyway, but def. need some favia or something other than zoa to grow across the BB..

How is it doing? I've got a couple favia that I'm starting to grow on the bottom glass, but they will eventually hit the side glass. I've been thinking about what I will do when they hit the side/front glass.
