I just moved and am rebuilding my reef. I decided to go bare bottom but can’t decide if I should do the rockscape on the bare glass or put starboard down. The Previous set up, the rock was placed direct on the glass and sand was added around the rock. I painted the bottom black yesterday and it looks good as is so I’m not sure. Any bare bottoms glass only?

I just started a bare bottom build. I think as long as your rocks arent in danger of falling and cracking the bottom glass it should be ok without starboard.

I have a BB. Rock directly on glass. No problems. You can arrange your rocks outside of the tank and epoxy them together then place in tank.

Yup. Bare bottom glass only here. 80 shallow deep blue:

LOL I see you have a wrasse and a container of sand. I will probably lay be doing the same. My corris took quick to the Rubbermaid container in my temp tank. I need to use a deeper container though for the reef. He has made a mess

I run bare bottom with an ABS plastic sheet cut to size, very happy with the result. Coraline encrusting nicely in many spots after only about 4 months. I'm sure you can get similar results with glass but for me the extra protection if a rock were to fall and the easier look on the eyes made it worth the 70-90$ if I remember.

Just make sure to not put it directly in front of a powerhead like I did. When he nestled in and sprays sand up, powerhead just helps spread it all around. And I just vacuumed today. I need to top his sandbox off every waterchange and just vac it out when removing water. Ha. That’s the cup my clowns are being hosted by as well before his bed time. (Have 2 pair, one figured out what the nems were for though)

I have a BB with rockwork only. As long as your rocks don’t budge easily your fine. I’m going to add putty to mine soon to be safe.

I think the danger of a rock falling and actually breaking the glass is so minimal that it isn’t really worth worrying about. Tempered glass is pretty tough stuff.

BB and the glass is finally starting to turn pink and look cool. It really is crazy how much your Alk drop once the coraline starts getting going

I keep a small pile of sand on the back right for my snails that like to spend daytime hiding in it

I used a reciprocating saw to make the bases of the aquascape perfectly flat. It helped stabilize the entire structure. My rock is BRS pukani and it cut through like butter.
