Bare Bottom Lovers

Here mine is. I too like to crank the flow and grow stuff on the bottom.

Nice , like that!

That is exactly my plan on my new tank. I want to keep my pistol and goby pair but want most of the tank bb. I will try to create a dam area with sand by using rockwork and leave the rest bb. (Actuall textured abs) Worst case if it doesnt work I'll vac the sand out.

I want the bb areas for growing zoas and such.

Yes, have also been fiddling around with different boundary area ideas for a small sand bed, as want to still keep the coons for as long as I can :D, don't know their life span...yet..lol.

I'm expecting a little bit extra maintenance because I'm sure the pistol and my clowns will keep moving the sand. I bought some shelf rock from BRS and some of the pieces are very flat and hopefully will make a nice dam that won't look too out of place.

I am trying to find the best “faux sand” look or finish for my planned, bare bottom, SPSDominated tank. I am new to RC and forums in general, so I’m sorry if this isn’t an appropriate place to post or ask.... :-)

I’ve bought into the abs plastic and may default to black or deep sea blue, but I’m seeking input on anyone that has a clean look of faux sand? I’m sure something exists or there is a solution... I just haven’t found it yet, other than the below options I’m considering for comment, please!

I haven’t exactly found yet but I’m sure exists, a rough textured sand colored abs, though that could look chintzy if flat “tan”.

Alternatively, I’ve found some desert sand vinyl wall covering, but I wonder if it’s reef safe? I think it’s the kind for RV/camper/Mobile home walls or bathrooms. Is this reef safe?

I’ve considered grainy sand spray paint and wonder if anyone knows if/how spray paint can be reef safe or sealed to be so?

If I spray, I’d do it on a sheet of abs which I could remove later and provides protection and the “faux sandy finish/look” on the top surface of my BB.

Lastly, I have another idea I’m sure has been done... Does anyone have photographs and material source for a mirrored look on the bottom and what material? I found mirrored “stick-on” plastic tiles on Amazon... thoughts? Unfortunately they’re 6”x6” and I don’t want seams but I could possibly hide most of them with rock and coral or perhaps “spotty” sprayed on sand finish.... it could get a little crazy looking with the mirrors... does anyone have good photos? I am new to RC and forums and struggling a bit looking through all the info efficiently

Thank you!

Yes, boatoutfitters.com “Sea Foam” color Starboard is closest to aragonite in color.

Awesome. I’m checking it out thanks for input. I can always spray or glue some additional “grain/sandiness”!

You can try, and others have seemed to have some success, but to be honest nothing really adheres well to Starboard.

For weeks and weeks, I read every single article on the reef sites about the pros and cons of a bare bottom.
I decided to go that route and have never looked back. So many benefits from day one and over time. Don’t worry about starboard, coralline will cover most of the bottom.

Are all those palys/zoas attached just to the glass? Or are there rocks under them?

I've always enjoyed bare bottom and sand. Both have pros and cons. The bare bottom was easier to maintain for us. Our next tank will have sand.

I’ve been thinking about going BB... but I was worried my trach and fungia wouldn’t take well to it. I was wondering how yours like the glass?
