Bare bottom reef tank better?

I'm sure someone experienced can do either. But I'm not sure it holds true on average and for less experienced people.

I am setting 500 litres with BB. For the first time. I do not agrre that sand siffters aare sufficient to eliminate old tank syndrome. I had 250 with SB and DSB... bombs away after 7 years
