I'm thinking about setting up a bare bottom frag tank and I'm just looking for any advice, tips, or any other useful information to help me along in getting this system going.

I am not a BB kinda guy, but for those that do use starboard to put on the bottom of the tank..it looks good and helps with not having to scrape the coralline algae off the bottom.

Thanks for the advise guys. I didn't even think about painting the bottom. Now do I need to add live rock? I have a great skimmer rated for 180 gal. That is gonna be running on a 40 gal. Main tank with 20 gal. Sump

shouldn't have to...most people make a stand out of eggcrate and call it good

That was my plan. I just wasn't sure if I needed the natural filter. So if I'm running a frag tank with no sand and no live rock I don't need to cycle the tank then?

it does need to be cycled..I would use tank water from your main tank to initially get the frag tank started.

that is what I do with all my QT tanks.

Wouldn't coralline algae grow on starboard as well?

I run my 312 gallon sps system as bare bottom tank. I put down white foam board under the tank so it will reflect the light back up until the coralline covers it up. Also i have my flow adjusted so all the detritus pools in one area making it really easy to suck it out
Heres couple pics

Looks very nice! I am thinking of going bare bottom on a 120 I'm setting up.
