I've decided to go barebottom for this upcoming build but according to BRS, the cycle takes much longer in BB tanks, especially since I'm using dry rock.

I do have a bit of seachem matrix in my diy denitrator and I'm putting that in the sump but I was wondering if I could have the stability of sand in the display if i put it in the fuge.

Does this offset the cycle worries of a BB?

My fuge will be plumbed off my return so no build up of gunk is expected.

Any sand is additional surface area for bacteria plus the added benefit of a home for microfauna.
The downside is a buildup of less than desirable muck too. Now.. this can actually be a good thing if you are going the deep sand bed direction, as that works amazingly well as a Nitrate reducer as well as being a great overall stabilizer.
The bad part of all that is, if you get to a point of great stability with a DSB, and then disturb it..... Very bad things can happen.
It's a balancing act really. If you have things that will keep the DBS relatively clean like sand sifting stars, certain types of cowries and the like, things usually go well

If u are trying to have deep sand bed away from display. I would recommend check out reef builder Europe trip to white coral set up. They have deep rock bed act as deep sand bed. I think it's cleaner and easier to maintain.
Also I would recommend use filter socks before drink water into that chamber, so u don't have build up of waste.

At 7:48 he talks about deep rock bed.

Well I use a filter sock before the skimmer and then the fuge is plumbed off the return so I dont feel like there'd much muck to build up. Going to watch the vid but people make it seem like for stability, sand does a better job than just rock. If that's so, wouldnt it be better to cram it with matrix instead?

I dont want a deep sandbed. Seems like a time bomb.
