Barebottom Tank Coral Recommendations

Not sps but this is an older pic of my war coral. I've moved it since and it's encrusting 2 places now.

You can see it here in the beginning of this video. It's covering most of the left bottom of my tank.

your war corals awesome totally beautiful really like how it's growing over bottom.

I keep any wrasse I want in my barebottom. Never seemed to bother the fish they just go in the rock work.

Right now it is just a dish with sand. I am making a couple out of e-Marco 400 mortar and rock rubble for the new tank. I'll get a pic for ya when I'm done.

Another easy way would be glue rocks to my dish making it blend in

Thanks, I would definitely be interested in seeing that when it is done.

So no sand at all for the wrasses? I didn't realize that was an option. How long have you had the wrasse like this?

Also, back to one of my original questions, no one has any pictures of a monti cap growing on the bottom of their barebottom tank?!?!

Bare bottom with a sand dish :)
Yup; the easy solution. :)

Not all genera of wrasses require sand; which species are you referring to?

The genera which require sand are not likely to survive long term without it. (Anampses, Halichoeres, Macropharyngodon, Pseudojuloides)

Look great Gabriel

Look into getting a wrasse den from the alternative reef. Looks sweet and my wrasse loves it.

Where can I find a "wrasse den"? It isn't listed as a product on their site and I looked at their vendor list and none of them carry it. Where can I get more info on this? Thanks

Anyone else have any pics they can share with corals that have done well on their barebottom tanks?? Thanks

I saw someone grow a colony of JF Jack-o-lepto on the BB glass before. Definitely beautiful. I may go BB on my next build for exactly the idea you're describing.

I am bumping this thread with a new question. How does everyone secure their frags/coral to the bottom of their barebottom tank? I have not been able to find much on this out there.

Thanks

bump.ya was thinking of doing this as well, obviously once it starts to encrust ya dont have to worry about it but did ya dab a piece of glue on it first to stick it to the bottom? i guess thats a silly question because once it starts to encrust its basically the same thing as having it glued lol

I tried this with encrusting monti (rainbow) and plating (green cap) and the coral and the frag plugs won't stick to the glass with just super glue. They kept getting pushed by the high flow and the snails. I then tried using zoas which was a mistake for an sps tank. Covered the bottom well and looked nice but it became a detritus trap and defeated the purpose of going bare bottom :)

For the original poster, 5 years too late. Red cap growing off the bottom of my tank.

I glued it to the bottom with gel super glue. It held well, but I already had coralline covering the bottom.
