Hey all,
I bought 24kgs of dry base rock to 'scape my tank and then a few pieces of cured live rock that i could wedge here and there around it all.
i also used a bottle of Dr Tims bacteria and a hundful of bioballs from an already established aquarium at my LFS

how long should it take before i start to see all the dead base rock start to turn brown, grow algae and stuffs and basically get dirty enough that i could add CUC without them starving

A month, possibly two.

Base rock doesnt necessary turn brown or grow anything in that amount of time either and thas a pretty big window. You want to pay attention to you water tests more than visual observation. Read the "how to cycle" section of the forum, answers a lot of questions. :).
